The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

boys-night_00073-scaled

Boys’ Night Out (1962). Interior design trends in the late 1950s and early 1960s were a crazy mix of the good, the bad, and the ugly. For some reason the contemporary taste makers of that time decided to mess up a good thing by adding foo foo elements to the otherwise beautiful mid-century modern trend. These prissy details included gilding, Chinese statuary, bad art, bright colors, swirly rococo lines, marbleized mirrors, and hairspray.

It’s only through captured stills of film sets that I can identify the good, the bad, and the ugly, and Boys’ Night Out is packed with all kinds of 1960 trendy clichés. Notice that there are no captions on the following photos. My intentions are for each of you to discover what you consider the good, the bad, and the ugly. All has been done in good fun. A blast from the past.

love this, sold a house that looked just like this over near White Rock Lake,…stepping back into time…quite fun!

Ann, I remember that house quite well. It was so great of you to let me tour the house with you. I do hope the owners have been kind to it.

  2. Margaret Downs-Gamble says:

Love these stills, PA. I toured a house in Virginia with a turquoise kitchen. Even the appliances were that astonishing color– and looked like they belonged in the Jettsons’ home.
I find some of the lamps in these photos to be sinful

    1. Patsy Ann says:

Margaret, I was afraid to point out what I thought was “sinful”, and sure enough one of my facebook friends commented on how much she loved the color orange. I was having problems liking its use in some of the furnishings and wanted to voice my opinion, but now I’m glad I didn’t. Maybe it’s safe to point out one sin that we all can agree on and that is the dirty gray shag carpet. Just downright nasty.

Best looking thing in the rooms was Jim Garner! Haha! Thank goodness my mother never submitted her children to this style…but the I didn’t get off scot-free, she fell in love with shag carpeting!

    1. Patsy Ann says:

Saira, like your mother my mother didn’t go for most of the trends except for one. ORANGE! Orange garage. Orange refrigerator. Orange kitchen floor. Orange, pink, violet wallpaper in kitchen. Orange upholstery. Orange, pink, purple, and red striped sheets. Just thinking about it makes me feel like putting on my sunglasses.

The 1960’s had some great furniture style. Love the sofas and the kitchen areas. Very pleasing to the eyes. : > )
