the essential accessory
My summer collection of hand fans. With our Dallas temperature consistently hovering around 109 degrees, I can’t imagine life without this simple accessory. Over the years, I’ve collected an interesting group, despite the fact they are hard to find — that is if you’re looking for something more sophisticated than the Asian souvenir type of fan. How can a basic and beautiful tool be so under appreciated? The Asian sandalwood fan is my everyday choice. They are a bit fragile, but easier to find, very affordable, and have a wonderful scent. Occasionally I come across a stinky one that has been unnaturally enhanced and requires a year to calm down before it can be taken out into public. If you’re in Dallas, World Market has a fun selection of paper souvenir types of fans along with the sandalwood variety.
my maternal grandmother
To all of us grandkids, she was called Bookie. Since my mother’s death, my brother and I have been culling through all sorts of things. Lots and lots and lots of stuff. And more stuff. One of my jobs is to sort through bushels of loose photos and numerous photo albums. Eventually most of this will have to be scanned by me, but for right now, I’m in need of some fun. Hence the glamour shots are the first to be digitized.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Bookie followed in the footsteps of her mother and became a model in her late teens. The only difference in their modeling careers was the medium. Bookie had been one of the first photographic models of the twentieth century, while her mother had posed for fashion illustrations in the early 1900s.
I am only posting a sampling of the photos. By following the link below, you will see all types of fashions. From furs, embroidered gowns, hats, beaded evening attire to funky casual and swim wear. The only disappointment is the choice of furniture in the sets. The styling is certainly not art deco. If I hadn’t called your attention to this, you probably would not have noticed.
i am love (style)
The clothes and accessories. Produced by Silvia Venturini Fendi of the famous Fendi family, the film could be considered fashion porn. The leading star, Tilda Swinton, was entirely dressed by Jil Sander’s Raf Simons. The house of Fendi dressed the men and also provided extraordinary furs for the magnificent Marisa Berenson, who plays the perfectly put-together mother-in-law with a preference for vintage ’70s furs. In fact, all of the Recchi women favor a classic look. The impression is that clothes in this family are passed down, not shopped for. Tilda, in an interview, described the choices as an expressive wardrobe. “There were moments when, for her to wear a red dress at the point which she falls in love, there’s a control one can expect on the palette of the film if one works in that way.”
